How to use The Theatre Training Checklist

The Theatre Training Checklist is a framework that aims to facilitate awareness, understanding, coordination and cooperation of training for all team members within the operating department. It is a practical strategy that can be adopted in any operating theatre.

The Theatre Training Checklist is completed at the start of the operating list during the theatre brief, prior to this trainee’s should identify and discuss their training goals with their trainer.

During the brief, all trainees are identified and the team is asked ‘what training will be achieved today?’ following which, each respective trainer will outline which aspect of the procedure their trainee will focus on.

The debrief is also used as an opportunity for the team to reflect on training and for individual trainees and trainers to complete work-based assessments.

The Theatre Training Checklist tool

The Theatre Training Checklist Tool can be used to help identify learners within the operating theatre and outline their training goals during the operating list.

Here is an example of the how The Theatre Training Checklist can be used in a general surgery setting.

For example, if there is a CT1 and ST4 in General Surgery and a core anaesthetic trainee with the list including a laparoscopic cholecystectomy and open right hemicolectomy.

The anaesthetic trainee is given the opportunity to perform the intubation while the CT1 trainee performs the insertion of the ports for the laparoscopic cholecystectomy while the ST4 performs the dissection with the consultant unscrubed.

Thus allowing the CT1 to perform an index procedure and the ST4 do the more complex aspect of the procedure.
