A toolkit to improve training in the operating theatre

The operating theatre is an essential learning environment for trainees of many different disciplines and specialities: anaesthetists, nurses, operating department practitioners, surgeons and increasingly members of the extended surgical team, such as: advanced critical care practitioners, advanced care practitioners, physician associates, surgical first assistants and surgical care practitioners.

For individual trainees to achieve their training goals within the operating theatre, the whole team needs to work together.

The Theatre Training Checklist is a framework that can improve awareness, coordination communication and shared understanding of training within the operating department while also improving team moral and cohesion.
